Volunteer with Conversation Over Borders!
Who are Conversation Over Borders?
“We bridge borders through conversation.”
Everyone has a voice, but not everyone is listened to equally. We support forcibly displaced people to share their experiences with the wider public in order to campaign for a fairer UK.
They offer one-to-one online befriending, English classes, mental health support, digital access and inclusion to people fleeing war and persecution who are seeking safety in the UK.
By bringing people together, they spark cross-cultural conversations.
We have more in common than we do dividing us.
Volunteers provide the bedrock of what Conversation Over Borders offers; their one-to-one English Conversation Classes.
Classes run for 8 week blocks, working with the same person twice a week, for a minimum commitment of 16 weeks.
You do not need to be a trained teacher to apply and we provide teaching support and resources for our volunteers. Our services are client-oriented and we therefore arrange to interview and induct volunteers once we have a suitable client in mind to pair them with. For this reason, please provide as much detail as possible in your application.
As far as possible, we take everyone's preference into account when it comes to age, gender and the level of English that you feel comfortable tutoring. The classes provide an opportunity for cultural and language exchange. Please let us know if you would are trying to learn a particular language (e.g. Arabic) and would like to be set up for a language exchange!
We offer Wellbeing support and Safeguarding training to all of our volunteers and clients.
Please note, due to Safeguarding reasons we can only accept volunteers over the age of 18. If you are based in the UK, we can apply for an Enhanced DBS Check on your behalf.
Any volunteers applying from outside of the UK must have a clear criminal records check dated within the last year in place prior to applying to volunteer.
