Volunteer with The Railway Land!
Who are the Railway Land Wildlife Trust?
A wild place in the heart of Lewes. This urban wildlife haven can be found in the heart Lewes, just off Cliffe High Street and close to the train station.
Nestling on the flood plain of the River Ouse, the reserve was once a busy railway marshalling yard that has now been reclaimed by nature. The area where the railway sidings once stood is now crammed with wildflowers which buzz with life. The reserve also boasts 4 distinct water habitats that are vital to different forms of wildlife!
Volunteers support all of their programmes of work, from school visits to helping with their Wellbeing project, their events and the practical conservation work undertaken on the nature reserve. Their projects such as Changing Chalk, Nature Links and Lewes Mosaic also have many volunteering opportunities.
Some roles can be undertaken on an adhoc basis, while others require more commitment and will involve some training. They try to tailor their volunteering opportunities so that volunteers benefit from giving their help - whether by improving their work experience and CVs, or from getting involved with a friendly, like minded group of people.
Meadow Minders
The Meadow Minders meet at 10am on the 1st Sunday of every month, and at 10am on the third Friday outside the Linklater Pavilion and carry out practical conservation work to restore important wildlife habitats and to help maintain the site. Please wear clothes suitable for practical work and sturdy footwear. Protective gloves and tools are provided.
Cockshut Stream Restoration project
The Railway Land are really excited to be involved in the Cockshut Restoration project, and Beverley Hunnybun will be coordinating the volunteer sessions there on the first Saturday and second Friday of the month.
